Cultural Shows
Traditional culture is manifested in all walks of life. In parks, you can see elders practicing tai chi, or writing calligraphy on the pavement using water-filled brushes. Opera singers sing about the history of China, dressed in brightly coloured costumes. Tea is also a part of traditional life, and the red paper cut-out art showing images of a timeless China.

Kung Fu
The theory of Kung Fu is based upon classical Chinese philosophy. Deeply influenced by Confucian philosophy, it promotes good moral character, nourishes the spirit and fosters proper temperament. The sacred Shaolin Monastery is widely regarded as the birthplace of one of the most popular branches of Chinese Kung Fu.
Tai Chi
One is the most widely practiced martial art in the world today and modified forms have become popular in recent times due to the associated health benefits. It is said to calm the mind, relax the body, relieve stress and improve general health. Early morning tai chi with Chinese elders in the local park is a popular way to participate and make new friends.
Opera
In ancient times, Peking Opera was performed mostly on stage in the open air, teahouses or temple courtyards. Since the orchestra played loudly, the performers developed a piercing style of song that could be heard by everyone. The costumes were a garish collection of sharply contrasting colours to stand out on the dim stage illuminated only by oil lamps. Peking Opera is a harmonious combination of ballet and acrobatics, consisting of dance, dialogue, monologues, martial arts and mime.
In Sichuan there is a specialised performance involving the actors twisting their heads to reveal changes in painted masks that they wear on their face….again and again. This style dates back 300 years ago during the Qing dynasty, legend has it that a hero who stole from the rich to give to the poor was caught by officials, he changed his face to puzzle them and thus escaped.
Acrobatics Considered a grand form of art since the Qing dynasty, Chinese Acrobatics have a long and distinguished history, their practitioners are renowned for their agility – the best performers are able to carry out balancing acts, kung fu, juggling etc. Shows are performed in most major towns and cities due to popular demand from locals and visitors.
Tang Dynasty Show
Tang Dynasty Music and Dance Show take roots from the historical records and folk and shows to the audience the court life and social costumes of more than 1,300 years ago through such performance as instrument playing and dancing. A popular way to spend the evening in Xian involves sampling the delicious local dumplings before the performance.
Liu San Jie Impression Show
Boasting a magnificent natural stage - the Li River - complete with mist shrouded hills as it's backdrop, it's a new concept for Opera using nature as an intergral part of the performance involving 600 artists from the local area. With artistic direction coming from the man who mastermined the opening ceremony of the 2008 Beijing Olympics - Zhang Yimou, the audience is treated to a show encompassing coloured lights, singing, dancing, modern and classical chinese music, bamboo boats and comorant fishing birds.
The show can be seen in Yangshuo near Guilin.
